Anopheles pseudopunctipennis

Pena Blanca Lake
Santa Cruz County, Arizona
Coordinates: 31.398603, -111.089844
Elevation: 3,834 ft
October 18, 2019
Size: 5 mm to tip of wings
Determined by Salvador Vitanza
Confirmed by Dr. Jonathan F. Day, Professor Emeritus at University of Florida/IFAS – Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory, after viewing these images, said: “Beautiful specimen. The diagnostic trait for adult Anopheles pseudopunctipennis is that the palps have pale bands at the apex of segments 2-5. It appears that there are pale bands on the palps. I don’t believe that An. pseudopunctipennis has been reported from Arizona, so this may be a state record and worthy of a publication. The only other possibility is Anopheles punctipennis where the palps are entirely dark scaled.”
