Pesticides

Pesticides

Traces of synthetic pesticides such as diazinon have been detected in the El Paso sewer system. Because the sewage treatment plants are not designed to remove these pesticides, there is a potential for pesticides to pass untreated into the Rio Grande and harm fish and other aquatic organisms.

Pesticides Don't Belong Down the Drain!

Before You Purchase a Pesticide...Identify the pest problem. Call the Texas AgriLife Extension Service at (915) 851-2515 for assistance.

Consider using alternatives to chemical control, such as:

  • boric acid products to control roaches
  • 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid to 1 gallon of water to control aphids or spider mites
  • insect baits and traps to control certain pests
  • microbial insecticides found at local retailers

Read the pesticide label to find the best products for the target pest. If chemical control is required, purchase only what is needed or consider hiring a licensed and certified pest control professional.

Before You Apply a Pesticide

Read the pesticide label for correct mixing and use directions. Mix only the necessary amount.

When Applying a Pesticide

Apply only to the target area or plants.

When You Clean Up

NEVER pour unused pesticides down household or storm drains, toilets, or manholes. Instead, spray on yard, or properly store for a Household Hazardous Waste Collection.

Do clean up activities outdoors on the lawn. To remove pesticide residue: triple rinse containers and equipment into a bucket, then spray rinse water on target area.
