Texas Master Naturalist Program @ El Paso Garden Center

We are now currently taking applications for the upcoming  Texas Master Naturalist class starting in February 2016.

Below is a basic description of the program:

This program will offer participants with 16 weeks of training (including 6 trips), essential information and strategies to restore and conserve our indigenous species and habitats.  Throughout the training classes, professionals from various agencies and local experts will cover interesting topics about our natural resources and lead hands-on field trips to local ecosystems.

Texas Master Naturalist Trainings cover the following topics:

Land Ethics, Weather & Climate, Urban Ecology, Ornithology, Geology, Archaeology, Botany, Herpetology, Invertebrates and many more.

Training classes will be held from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. each Wednesday starting
February 10th, 2016 and continue through May 18th, 2016. Classes will be held at the El Paso Garden Center located on 3105 Grant Ave 79930. The fee for the program is $125.00. Each participant will be provided the Trans-Pecos Master Naturalist handbook (a comprehensive text) as well as various handouts on topics covered in each class.

2016 Texas Master Gardener Program @ Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service

The Master Gardener program offers 12 weeks of intensive horticulture training on such topics as vegetable gardening, trees and pruning, xeriscaping, soils, fertilizers, plant pests and more. After successful completion of the course, participants are required to volunteer time, sharing with the community what they have learned through a number of educational related projects.

The fee for the course is $195.00 (with a $30.00 refund after completing the volunteer requirements). Each participant will be provided the Texas Master Gardener Handbook (a comprehensive horticultural text) as well as various other handouts on topics covered in each class. Orientation is set to begin September 1st with a four hour session. Classes will begin on September 8 and continue through November 17, 2016.

Classes will meet every Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and will be held at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office Ascarate Annex, 301 Manny Martinez Dr. 79905 and will be taught by professionals from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, as well as other regional horticulture experts.

Urban Horticulture & Landscape Conference @ Texas A&M AgriLIfe Research Center
Sep 30 @ 8:00 am – 3:00 pm

Join us for our urban horticulture conference. Our program will cover selecting and planting trees in your landscape and fall lawn care. We will also discuss the best plants for an edible landscape and show you how to prepare your own home aquaponics system. A combination of field activities and classroom sessions will provide you with practical information leading to success with your own urban oasis.
Lunch is included with your registration fee. Space is limited so register by Sept 28th.

2017 Texas Master Naturalist Course @ Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service

The mission of the Trans-Pecos Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist Program is to develop a group of well-informed volunteers to provide education,outreach and service dedicated toward the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas. Course topics include:

· Land Ethics · Geology · Invertebrate Biology
· Archeology · Desert Ecology · Botany
· Ornithology · Aquatics · Herpetology

Classes will be held each Thursday night from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Texas A&M
AgriLife Extension- Ascarate Annex- 301 Manny Martinez 79905. There are also six
Saturday field trips to area parks for hands-on training. To become a Certified Texas
Master Naturalist, trainees must complete:

· Attendance at all training classes, including field trips (60 hours total)
· 40 hours of volunteer service on approved projects within a year
· 8 hours of advanced training in approved classes within a year
· Pass a state-mandated background check

Class fee is $125. Registration deadline is February 6th, 2017. Class size is limited, and
applicants selected to attend the class will be contacted no later than Feb. 10th, 2017.

Take charge of your HEALTH!

The Fit to Grow program is a FREE nutrition and food basics classroom series developed by  Texas AgriLife Extension Service specifically for employees for the County of El Paso. Employees attend a 1 hour class each week for 5 weeks.

Topics covered:
• How to build a healthy plate
• Eating the right amount of calories
• Reading food labels and more
• Keeping your food safe

Their benefits:
•  Learn how our food choices affect your health
•  Learn how some diseases can be better managed or even prevented with basic nutrition changes
•  Learn how diet can help to lower or maintain a healthy weight

As a bonus 3 of the classes will include a gardening component to include topics on; edible gardening in small spaces, growing herbs in containers, planning your fall vegetable garden and one class will include a food tasting/recipe demo with produce provided by El Paso TRUE FOOD, through the Farm to Work Employee Wellness Program.
